CRITICAL
STUDIES . . .
contemporary
writing for the ceramic arts
8th
- 10th November, 2006
organised
by the
INTERNATIONAL CERAMICS STUDIO in
conjunction with ICMEA
(International
Ceramic Magazine Editors Association) and supported by the INTERNATIONAL
ACADEMY OF CERAMICS.
THE
CONFERENCE
A
three day conference for writers, editors, critics, historians, documentors
and ceramic artists.
THE
VENUE
The International Ceramics Studio, Kecskemét, Hungary,
has been a catalyst for innovative and experimental ceramic art for over
a quarter of a century. Situated 80 kms south of the Hungarian capital
Budapest, Kecskemét is a thriving market town in the centre of
the Great Hungarian Plain.
CONFERENCE
THEMES
We have selected two general themes to be the focus for the talks to address
the issues of internationalism in ceramics and the widening our knowledge
of the ceramics community.
"Critical
Studies"
In the early years of a new millennium in ceramic arts, what challenges
does the role of ceramic criticism face? Do we strive for a common ceramic
vocabulary and language or celebrate the cultural diversity and differences.
Does the internet promote a global melting pot of diluted comment or can
new media create an international forum for critical theory and debate?
"Uncovering Ceramics"
Discovering the hidden histories of ceramics and culture. For over half
a century the countries of the former eastern block were largely overlooked
by the established western media and overshadowed by fog of an imposed
political system. Similarly the ceramic cultures of many previously underepresented
countries are now emerging into the global gallery space.
