Nerikomi and Neriagi Colored Porcelain Clay Techniques
with Dorothy Feibleman

In this intensive five day workshop students will learn how to work with nerikomi and zogan inlaid laminated colored porcelain clay using a unique variety of coloring and fusing methods developed by the artist. Participants will learn how to mix colors, how to make gradations and how to make patterns. They will also complete a sake cup or tea bowl and learn finishing techniques.
Since, 1995 the London-based artist has worked with white clays with varied translucency and color and recently she developed new translucent white porcelains. She is currently working on a book about colored clay in contemporary Japanese ceramics and its influences from and to the West.
Dorothy Feibleman is one of most experimental porcelain arists in the world. She started working with colored laminated clay (Nerikomi or Neriage in Japanese words) in 1969. In her work, different colored porcelains and clay bodies are laminated together in such a way that every change in color, texture and translucency is structural.
These forms are also dependent on the movement ofthe above elements in the construction, drying and firing. Since 1995 the artist has been working almost exclusively with white clays with varied translucency and color. Recently, in a special project at Jikken kobo, Inax, Tokoname, Japan, Feibleman developed new translucent porcelain and zogan processes for industry. As a result of the research, she made the largest, thinnest translucent nerikomi zogan studio pieces to date.
In 1973, she moved to England and set up her first studio. She divides her time between England and Japan where she has been a guest artist at Inax, Tokoname, ShigarakiCeramic Cultural Park, Shigaraki, in 1997 and 1999, and Seto Ceramic & Glass Center, Seto City in 2001.
She set up her own studios in Tokoname, Japan. She has given lectures, demonstrations or taughtat Kyoto Geidai, Tokyo Geidai, Tsinghua University Beijing, PRC, Jingdezhen Art University, PRC, and Rhode Island School of Design, RI, USA. She has participated in many exhibitions internationally. Her works were included in a number of public collections including Victoria andAlbert Museum, London, England, Stuttgart Museum, Germany, Metropolitan Museum ofArt, New York, International Ceramic Studio Museum, Kecskemet, Hungary and Museum of Contemporary Ceramics, Shigaraki, Japan. She has been featured in several publications including Ceramic Monthly Magazine, Dictionary of British Studio Potters, Ceramic Review and The Studio Potter
The tutor will give short demonstrations and the students will then have time to explore what has been shown, with the tutor’s guidance if necessary. Students will be encouraged to discuss their progress with each other as they work.

Dorothy Feibleman will give a presentation about her own work on the first afternoon. There will be no taught evening sessions but students have 24 hour access to the studios if they wish to continue working.

MESTERKURZUS DOROTHY FEIBLEMAN VEZETÉSÉVEL

A mesterkurzuson a résztvevők megtanulják, hogyan használják a nerikominak és zogannak nevezett színezett, rétegelt porcelánt a művész által kifejlesztett egyedi színezési és összeolvasztási technikával. Elsajátítják a színek keverését, hogyan készítsenek színárnyalatokat és mintákat. A tanultak alkalmazásával előállítanak egy szakés, vagy teáscsészét.
Dorothy Feibleman az egyik legkísérletezőbb kedvű porcelánművész az egész világon. Színezett, rétegelt agyaggal (japánul Nerikomi vagy Neriage) 1969-ben kezdett dolgozni. Munkáiban különféle színezésű porcelán és agyagrétegeket dolgoz össze, melyek szerkezetében változatos módon szerepe van a színnek, a textúrának és az áttetszőségnek.
Formái a fenti elemek mozgása, valamint a szárítás és égetés függvényében alakulnak. 1995 óta majdnem kizárólag áttetsző fehér és színezett agyagokkal dolgozik. Nemrégiben Japánban egy különleges projekt keretén belül kifejlesztette az új, áttetsző porcelán és a zogan eljárás gyári körülmények között alkalmazható változatát. A kutatás eredményeként a mai napig ő készítette el a legnagyobb, legvékonyabb, áttetsző nerikomi zogan technikával készül tárgyat.
Dorothy Feibleman demonstrációkat tart, majd a résztvevőknek elegendő idejük lesz arra, hogy a látottakat maguk is kipróbálják, a kurzusvezető útmutatásainak segítségével. A résztvevőket arra bíztatjuk, hogy tapasztalataikat egymással is osszák meg.

Dorothy Feibleman saját munkáiról tart bemutatót az első nap délutánján. Esténként nem lesznek oktatással egybekötött foglalkozások, viszont a résztvevők a nap 24 órájában használhatják a műtermeket, ha munkájukat folytatni kívánják.
