A mastercourse to learn the principles of transfer technologies - both direct and indirect.

Paul Scott is a leading proponent of ceramics and print through his 1994 book and his ongoing exhibitions. The ‘Scotts Cumbrian Blue(s)’ series, uses traditional domestic ware forms to project and illuminate contemporary social and political concerns. In doing so he revisits the idyllic Blue and White decorative depictions of the past, in order to provide thought provoking comment on the present.

Scott however, has gained international prominence in promoting a practice at odds with the traditional truth to materials and form/function concerns of craft potters, and indeed, of many studio ceramists. A leading proponent of ceramics and print, he has been instrumental in demonstrating the contemporary creative potential of a combination used in industry for hundreds of years to mass-produce decorative wares and tiles.

Paul Scott is an artist, writer, and curator. A member of the International Academy of Ceramics, he is currently completing Phd research project 'Confected Landscapes: Ceramic Surface, a Media Form' at MIRIAD, Manchester Metropolitan University. His landmark publication "Ceramics and Print" has become the accepted manual for ceramists working in the areas of printmaking and clay.

‘A seminal text within its field, the revised and extended version of Ceramics and Print builds further upon the ground-breaking precedent it set down upon its initial publication.  Originally demonstrating the use of paper, clay and printing within studio ceramics, Scott now embraces the information age that is the 21stC, detailing the most recent technological developments in this stimulating area, covering photocopiers, laser decals, flexography and digital techniques within ceramics today.  Incorporating a number of high resolution images selected from old and new methods, Scott re-situates the area of ceramics within contemporary culture.’ - Ceramics in Society review of 'Ceramics and Print'.

Paul Scott will give demonstrations and the students will then have time to explore what has been shown, with the tutor’s guidance. Participants will be encouraged to discuss their progress with each other as they work.

VITRIFIED PRINT TECHNIQUES - Relief, mono-print and lithography, the principles of transfer technologies: The course uses drawing, painting, stamps, photocopy and toner resist to explore the principles and possibilities of some of the following: mono-printing, lithography and low-tech ceramic transfers. During workshops participants can produce relatively complex and rich graphic ceramic surfaces by layering, and building on interlinking skills and processes. The possibilities of transferring these techniques to glass can also be explored if there is interest. Materials include paper, laserprint/photocopy,

Course fee: 150,000 HUF (incudes self catering accommodation in single room, course materials, firing costs and tuition)

Course Timetable

Students should bring

• Their own sketch books, images/patterns and ideas for artwork for prints, on paper or in digital form (laptop computers). Images of their own work.
• Anything that might be useful for experimental printing… Printing blocks, lead type, rubber stamps etc...
• Scissors, pencils, pens paintbrushes; clay tools, old credit/telephone cards, rolling pin (for clay); masking tape, scalpels, glue stick, files/envelopes erasers, good quality palette knives (at least 15/20cm long), a print roller if they have them.
• Their own personal clay tools (wires, modelling tools, ribs etc.

Paul Scott will give a presentation about his own work on the first afternoon. There will be no taught evening sessions but students have 24 hour access to the studios if they wish to continue working.

MESTERKURZUS PAUL SCOTT (GB) VEZETÉSÉVEL

A mesterkurzus alatt különféle, kerámiafelületeken alkalmazható nyomtatási technikákat lehet elsajátítani, mint például a direkt nyomtatás, intaglio, szitázás, matricázás, stb. A kurzus résztvevői ezeknek a technikáknak kerámia felületekre történő átviteli módszereit veszik sorra direkt és indirekt módon.

Paul Scott a kerámiákon alkalmazott nyomtatási technikák egyik kiemelkedő művelője, az e témában megjelent 1994-es könyve és folyamatos kiállításai révén. A Scott Cumbrian Blue elnevezésű szériáján hagyományos háztartási tárgyak felhasználásával jelenkori társadalmi és politikai jelenségekre utal. Visszanyúl a régi idők idilli kék- fehér díszítménykincséhez, hogy ezzel a jelenre vonatkozó megállapításokat provokáljon ki.
“Úttörő szerepe volt abban, hogy a tömegtermelésben több száz éve gyártott díszárukon és csempéken alkalmazott eljárást kreatívan párosította jelenkori megoldásokkal. A módszer ipari jellegéről kialakult kép, és az agyagművesség hagyományos módszereit valló művészek szerint az alkotó keze nyomának és munkaalázatának teljes hiánya tükröződik a nyomtatási technikával készült kerámiákon. Egy évtizede még a stúdiókerámiákon megjelenő nyomatokat szokatlannak találták, de ma már gyakorta előforduló dolog, nem utolsó sorban Paul Scott úttörő tevékenységének köszönhetően.”- írja Stephanie Brown  a Keramiek Magazin 2001. júniusi számában.

Paul Scott demonstrációk keretében mutatja be az egyes technikákat, majd a résztvevőknek elegendő idejük lesz arra, hogy a látottakat maguk is kipróbálják, a kurzusvezető útmutatásainak segítségével. A résztvevőket arra bíztatjuk, hogy tapasztalataikat egymással is osszák meg.
Kerámián alkalmazható nyomtatási technikák: dombornyomás, mono-print, litográfia, különféle átviteli technológiák. A kurzuson rajzokat, festményeket, pecséteket, fénymásolatokat használnak majd, hogy a fent említett technikák lehetőségeit és szempontjait felfedezhessék. A kurzus alatt a résztvevők a kurzusvezető szakértelmére és a tanultakra építve viszonylag végleges és grafikailag gazdag kerámiafelületeket hoznak létre. Ezeket az eljárásokat üvegfelületen is ki lehet próbálni, ha van rá érdeklődés.

Program

A résztvevők hozzanak magukkal: vázlatfüzetet, mintákat, ötleteket papíron, vagy digitális formában, illetve mindent, ami hasznos lehet a kísérletezéshez, gumipecsételőt, jegyzettömböt, ollót, ecsetet, tollat, régi telefonkártyát, ragasztót, borítékot, radírt, jó minőségű palette késeket (min. 15-20 cm), nyújtófát… stb. És saját kerámiakészítéshez szükséges eszközeit (huzal, mintázó szerszámok, stb.)

Paul Scott saját munkáiról tart bemutatót az első nap délutánján. Esténként nem lesznek oktatással egybekötött foglalkozások, viszont a résztvevők a nap 24 órájában használhatják a műtermeket, ha munkájukat folytatni kívánják.
