Inlaid Coloured Porcelain
with Susan Nemeth (Great Britain)

2nd - 8th October, 2012

Susan Nemeth is a designer and maker of handmade porcelain vases, bowls and decorative platters. Born in Australia, she trained at Wolverhampton Polytechnic.

Her work is inspired by the strongly graphic textile and ceramic designs of the 1950s and 60s. The painters, Ben Nicholson, Paul Klee and Eva Hesse influence some pieces. The decoration is integral using layers of coloured clays and slips. She has been awarded internationally and is mentioned in many publications.

In this course Susan Nemeth will explore colour, pattern and imagery using various techniques of staining and layering slips and porcelains.

. . . .

The technique involves laminating sheets of coloured clays inlaid with hand cut patterns, rolling and stretching the layers to create tiles and simple shapes formed starting from flat sheets of clay with some use of moulds. It includes drawing with the knife to make fine inlay, using sheets of clays to create collage, layering, cutting and re combining to generate neriage, producing inlay from impressions and painting and pouring slips. Finishing techniques will enhance the pure qualities of the clay with a range of strong, pure colour and soft, matt feel. There will be plenty of demonstrations and students will develop their design and technical skills and have ample opportunity to experiment freely.
