THE
COLOURS OF MONGOLIA Opened by Luvsan Battulga, Mongolian Ambassador to Hungary. >> click here to see images from the opening of the exhibition In between China and Russia stretches an enormous and sparsely populated country. Mongolia has a strong sense of history and an awareness of its ancient empire of Genghis Khan, the embodiment of strength, order and unity. In Mongolias snow silenced steppes the wind screams meaning and this wild emptiness is filled with beauty, music, singing and art. The art is not of typical influenced style, but instead it is a unique phenomena reflecting the cultural beauty of the country. In a society which has only been open to western influence for a little over a decade contemporary art sees Mongolian artists struggling and negotiating with their identity. While the majority of Mongolian paintings depict traditional life and landscape there is a well established and continuously developing contemporary art scene. This avant-garde work is an original synthesis of old approaches with new colors and investigations into concepts with traditional subjects. Only recently exposed to the avant-garde 'modern art' of the 20th Century, Mongolian artists now experimenting with techniques they have discovered from Europe, America and Asia. Artists play in a Picasso, Rothko or even Pollack style creating works where you might see Warholesque buddhas replacing Marilyn Monroe. >> click here to see images from the opening of the exhibition |
