ALTERNATIVE FIRINGS
with Patty Wouters

TOKOS ÉGETÉS
Patty Wouters-szel

25 - 29 September, 2023
course fee: 400,000 HUF.

▶ BOOK FOR THE MASTERCOURSE

During this course Patty Wouters will explain alternative firing techniques like saggar firing and other smoke firing techniques. Participants will explore the use of different kinds of clay, the difference in using (coloured) engobes, burnishing and the use of terra sigillata in combination with sulfates as colourants. There will be many possibilities for participants to explore and experiment with combining different techniques.

COURSE CONTENT

1. Various saggar firing possibilities and the difference if using various temperatures.
2. The difference between saggar firing and other smoke firing techniques.
3. Which clays can be used? How different are the results using different clays and firings at different temperatures?
4. The difference between burnished and unburnished ceramic work.
5. What kind of saggars can be used? How can you build your own saggar?
6. The use of sulfates and/or coloured engobes.
7. What kind of combustibles can be used?
8. How can you create special effects?

Participants should bring some tiles and/or ceramic pieces - 2 or 3 small (max 15 cm) bisqued pieces and maybe 5 bisqued tiles (12 x 12 cm) made in the clay you usually use at home.

You will also make more pieces here for raw clay working.

A TANFOLYAM TARTALMA

1. Különböző saggar égetések és más-más hőmérsékletek használatának eltérései
2. A saggar égetés és más redukciós technikák közötti különbség
5. Milyen saggar-ok használhatók? Hogyan lehet saját saggar-t készíteni?
6. A szulfátok és/vagy színes engóbok használata
7. Milyen éghető anyagokat lehet használni?
8. Hogyan lehet különleges effekteket létrehozni?

A résztvevők hozzanak magukkal néhány zsengélt csempelapot vagy kerámia tárgyat - 2-3 kisebb (max. 15cm) zsengélt darabok és 5 darab (12x12cm) zsengélt lapok, olyan agyagból, melyből otthon is dolgoznak.

A kurzus időtartama alatt is lesz tárgykészítésre lehetőség nyers agyagból.

Experiment with saggar firing in combination with terra sigillata and the use of metal sulphates as colorants.
During this workshop participants will explore different possibilities of saggar firing and some other alternative smoke firing techniques.

Patty will talk about smoke-firing and describe the relationship between form and smoke. She will introduce the different techniques involved with long firings (sawdust kiln, pitfiring and saggar firing) and fast firings (open fire with newspaper and sawdust).

Participants will decorate their own pieces using techniques such as resists, colorants (sulphates) and burnishing plus terra sigillata. Firings will include saggar and other alternative techniques.
